Is the gold buyback price the same everywhere?

No. On , Gold & Silver Company, a Belgian refinery open to private clients, buys back 18-carat gold at 79.88 €/g, 22-carat at 98.75 €/g, 14-carat at 61.04 €/g, 9-carat at 37.44 €/g and the 20 F Napoleon at 648.34 € per coin. This price is ours, published and net; another buyer, at the same time, will display their own, and that is precisely why you need to compare.

One gold price, as many buyback prices as there are buyers

There is only one gold price: it is the price of an ounce of fine gold on the markets, the same in Brussels, Paris or Zurich, and it moves continuously. But nobody buys your jewellery back at the gold price: a piece of jewellery is not fine gold; it has to be weighed, assayed, melted and refined, and each buyer freely sets the price at which they buy it back from you. The gold price is therefore a common ceiling; the buyback price is the decision of whoever makes you the offer.

What makes the price vary from one buyer to another

First, the number of intermediaries between you and the crucible: a jeweller often sells on to a wholesaler, who sells on to a refinery, and each takes their margin on the gram. Then the method: a flat-rate price per carat, applied to the gross weight without assaying, has nothing in common with a price per gram calculated on the gold weight at the measured fineness. Finally, transparency: a buyer who publishes their price per gram, per carat, makes a commitment in front of everyone; one who announces an amount “for the lot” commits only to you, and you have no way of comparing it.

The price also changes during the day

The gold price moves every minute; a serious buyer therefore updates their buyback price several times a day. Our prices are time-stamped: the date and time above are those of our latest update. Comparing two offers taken on different days, or in the morning and the evening of a volatile day, makes no sense; compare them at the same time, and keep a screenshot of each displayed price.

How to compare correctly

Same carat, same unit: a price per gram for 18-carat is compared with a price per gram for 18-carat, not with a price for “gold” in general or with an overall amount. Net price: ask whether anything else is deducted from it before payment. Net gold weight: stones, steel clasps and non-gold parts are removed from the weighing by everyone, but not always announced. Our page How much is my gold worth today? gives worked examples for a wedding ring, a chain or a lot, at today's price.

A refinery's price

A refinery assays, melts and refines itself; it has no reseller to pay and can publish a net price per gram, aligned with the gold price and updated with it. Gold & Silver Company, a smelter-refinery approved by the Royal Mint of Belgium and an approved assayer, in Dottignies (Mouscron), displays its buyback prices per carat on its private client rates: the displayed price is the price paid, nothing is added, nothing is deducted. Weighing and assaying are done before your eyes at the office, without an appointment, or in the laboratory for a registered parcel, with an offer within 24 hours and the return of your items if you decline it.

To find out what your gold is worth, the simplest thing is to bring it to us: the office of our refinery, rue Arthur Roelandt 22 in Dottignies (Mouscron), is open on Mondays from 10am to 1pm, Tuesday to Thursday from 10am to 12pm and from 1:30pm to 5pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm, without appointment; weighing and analysis before your eyes, immediate offer at the published price, and you remain free. Frequently asked questions

Why is the gold buyback price different from one gold-buying counter to another?

Because each buyer sets their own margin, number of intermediaries and calculation method; only the gold price is common to all.

Who sets the gold buyback price?

The buyer, freely, based on the gold price; with us, 79.88 €/g for 18-carat on 4 November at 17:31, published and updated several times a day.

Does the buyback price follow the gold price?

Yes, with a buyer who updates it with the gold price; a fixed or undated price is a reason for caution.

Is the gold buyback price the same in Belgium and in France?

The gold price is the same; the buyback price depends on the buyer, not on the country. A Belgian refinery open to private clients also welcomes sellers coming from France, on site or by registered post.

How do you know whether an offer is a good one?

Compare it, at the same time, with a published price per gram for the same carat; today 79.88 €/g for 18-carat.

Can you negotiate the gold buyback price?

With a buyer who publishes a net price, there is nothing to negotiate: the displayed price is the price paid, for everyone; with a flat-rate intermediary, the invisible margin leaves room for discussion, which says a lot about the starting price.
