How we calculate what your gold is worth
The buyback value of your jewellery depends on only two things: its gold weight and its fineness, that is its fine gold content. An 18-carat piece contains 750 thousandths of fine gold, a 14-carat piece 585 thousandths, a 9-carat piece 375 thousandths, a 22-carat piece 916 thousandths. The hallmark states the declared fineness; the refinery's laboratory measures it. The buyback price per gram, published every day per carat, multiplied by the gold weight, gives what you receive. The price displayed is the price paid: nothing is added, nothing is deducted.
Why the buyback price is not the gold rate
The gold rate is the price of an ounce of fine gold on the markets, the same all over the world. The buyback price of your jewellery is lower, because a piece of jewellery is not pure gold and has to be melted, analysed and refined to become fine gold again. At an intermediary, this margin is often invisible, taken as a flat rate per carat; at a refinery that processes the metal itself, it is reduced and the price is published. Our live gold price and our 18-carat gold buyback price show you both figures, at any time.
What raises or lowers the value of your jewellery
Fineness first: an old piece hallmarked 18-carat is worth more per gram than a 9-carat piece of the same weight. Gold weight next: stones, pearls, enamel, springs and steel clasps are removed from the weighing. Finally coins: a Napoleon, a Sovereign or a Krugerrand are bought back at their own price, published in our grid, and a rare coin or a sought-after year is valued higher, coin in hand. The condition of a piece does not matter: broken, bent or odd, it is worth its gold weight.
